WE ARE GROWING, and are currently seeking an experienced AREA MANAGER (Senior Project Manager) to be part of our growth and succession planning. We are looking for strong talent, and because we operate in Alberta, Saskatchewan and the Northwest Territories, we are happy to consider our applicants talents in any one of those locations. Reporting directly to the Division Manager, this position will provide ground level management and support on a wide variety of challenging projects.
 
RESPONSIBILITIES 
  
  • Oversee the planning, controlling and monitoring of projects, and direct resources to best meet project objectives.
  • Conduct weekly project reviews with Project Managers and Superintendents to ensure project scope, time, costs and budgets are being achieved.
  • Administer contract agreements, and ensure all contract obligations are met before project kickoff.
  • Oversee, navigate and resolve conflict disputes within the project.
  • Ensure work is performed to sound operating principles and company policy and procedures.
  • Monitor and actively participate in managing cash flow and receivables.
  • Conduct and/or review project estimates and total preparation/completion of construction tenders.
  • Ensure all objectives are reached to achieve contract completion and final acceptance certificates.
  • Secure and execute project administrative documents, such as Final Bonds, Insurance and Sub-contract agreements.
  • Troubleshoot project concerns such as bad weather, scheduling conflicts, quality control issues, labour issues, contractor and/or client concerns and other unforeseeable matters.
  • Examine engineering reports to ensure quality control requirements are met, and apply appropriate corrective action when necessary.
  • Maintain availability to Project Managers and Estimator as a subject matter expertise, and provide and enable employees with the tools and resources needed to resolve project issues.
  • Meet with onsite staff to discuss daily progress and project issues.
  • Inspect project worksite for any impending issues or concerns.
  • Review and assess work completed to ensure schedules are maintained.
  • Attend and participate in onsite meetings with clients, owners, representatives, staff, sub trades, contractors, and other project stakeholders.
  • Determine staffing requirements and interview, hire and/or train employees.
  • Comply with relevant legislation regarding employee management, terminations and resignations.
  • Handle all employee concerns; investigate concerns and questions ensuring all concerns are followed through from beginning to end.
  • Liaise with the Human Resource department on a variety of employee related issues, including employee development, recruitment, benefits, training, terminations, and investigations.
  • Delegate tasks and accountabilities.
  • Promote, execute and adhere to the company’s safety program, and encourage all employees, sub-contractors and consultants to adopt safety as a culture.
  • Work with Safety Department to investigate damage, incidents or near misses in the worksite, and ensure proper procedures are carried out according to the Company’s Safety Program.
  • Work in a safe, responsible manner to not intentionally or unintentionally injure oneself, or endanger the wellbeing of others.
  • Participate as an integral member of the team, and contribute towards the success of the organization, which may involve the provision of other technical and administrative support, as required.
  • Collaborate with any project teams on other special initiatives, as required.
  • Must ensure a solid understanding of, and comply with the principles of the company’s Code of Ethics.
  • Must examine situations in light of the principles of the Code of Ethics. 
  • Other related duties as required.
REQUIREMENTS/EXPERIENCE 
  
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience and proven track record in construction project management within the road construction industry, complimented by 1 to 2 years in Estimating and 2 to 3 years in Project Management.
  • Civil Engineering Technologist (CET) and/or Professional Engineer (P.Eng) designation preferred.
  • Knowledge of the various asphalt materials, mix parameters, compaction theory, quality assurance testing and relevant OHS and environmental regulations.
  • Must have a valid class 5 driver’s license.
  • Effective leadership skills, with a strong focus on operations and business processes.
  • Travel is required.
  • Overtime as required.
  • A portion of work is performed in an indoor setting and may include a combination of standing, sitting and walking. Sitting for extended periods of time is required.
  • Work is performed in an outdoor setting, which could include inclement weather, heat and humidity, and exposure to dust, grease, fumes, odors, oil, asphalt, and toxic and flammable substances.
  • The use of sunscreen, long sleeves, and appropriate headgear is recommended.
  • Must be physically able to repetitively lift and carry at least 10 lbs. on a regular basis.
  • Use of Personal Protection Equipment is required.
  • Must comply with all company policies.
  • Must comply with the company’s drug and alcohol testing requirements.
  • Manual dexterity required to use computer and peripherals.
