Reporting to the Area Manager, the Asphalt Paving Superintendent coordinates and supervises the asphalt paving process from the conceptual development stage, through to final construction. The Superintendent ensures that projects are completed on time and within budget.


The responsibilities of the Asphalt Paving Superintendent include, but are not limited to:
  • Ensure sufficient deployment and productivity of work crews.
  • Engage in open communication with Foremen, Project Managers, Area Managers and Division Manager and report any issues which could affect project plans.
  • Allocate resources where appropriate to achieve safety, schedule, cost, scope and quality objectives.
  • Calculate the number of trucks required to haul asphalt from the plant to the worksite, based on vehicle capacity, traffic conditions, distance to the work site, and other variables.
  • Place orders and track the timely delivery of asphalt and aggregates from company operated and third party plants.
  • Act as a conduit to resolve problems and concerns reported by paving employees, subcontractors and engineers.
  • Organize and coordinate the daily activities of all paving crew members, subcontractors, and equipment and utilize corrective action to keep the project on time and on budget.
  • Ensure payment in full for the contract price, including all accumulative charges and credits.
  • Identify and execute best practices concerning the efficient use of construction materials.
  • Work with supervisor to plan work in an efficient and effective order, maximizing progress in a safe and timely manner.
  • Review and adhere to construction schedules, ensuring milestones and completion dates are met.
  • Work with and oversee the performance of all sub-contractors, ensuring that work is completed on time.
  • Engage in business development activities, where opportunities present themselves.
  • Ensure great professional and public relations with owners, engineers, sub-contractors and the general public.
  • Make decisions on weather events and how operations should protect and minimize potential damage, including when to shut down work due to weather.
  • Read and interpret project plans and specifications.
  • Oversee and check work performed, to ensure job quality meets contract requirements, and utilize proper quality control methods and processes to achieve quality goals.
  • Ensure paperwork and employee timesheets are completed properly and submitted on time.
  • Ensure all new hires receive their required orientation, and attend company designated training.
  • Monitor and manage employee attendance, ensuring the timely arrival and participation of all crew members, and notifying employees of rain days, prior to the start of the work.
  • Delegate tasks and accountabilities, instruct, supervise, lead and direct paving crews.
  • Liaise between the company and employees on a variety of employee related matters.
  • Comply with relevant legislation regarding employee management, terminations and resignations.
  • Handle and thoroughly investigate all employee concerns.
  • Liaise with the Human Resource department on a variety of employee related issues, including employee development, recruitment, benefits, training, terminations, and investigations.
  • Assess employee competencies, and work with employees on developing their skills on the job.
  • Ensure consistent and fair application of the progressive disciplinary policy, as necessary.
  • Promote, execute and adhere to the company’s safety program, and encourage all employees, sub-contractors and consultants to adopt safety as a culture.
  • Ensure paving crews conduct daily and weekly safety meetings and inspections.
  • Ensure company Fatigue Management policy is understood and enforced.
  • Review safe work plans/hazard assessments with crew prior to job commencement.
  • Work with Safety Department to investigate damage, incidents or near misses in the worksite, and ensure proper procedures are carried out according to the Company’s Safety Program.
  • Work in a safe, responsible manner to not intentionally or unintentionally injure oneself, or endanger the wellbeing of others.
  • Participate as a vital team member, and contribute towards the success of the organization, which may involve the provision of other technical and administrative support, as required.
  • Promote a team approach and maintain dialogue with all employees to exchange information and gather ideas.
  • Attend meetings, trainings and other company related activities when required.
  • Collaborate with any project teams on other special initiatives, as required.
  • Must ensure a solid understanding of, and comply with the principles of the company’s Code of Ethics.
  • Must examine situations in light of the principles of the Code of Ethics. 
  • Other related duties as required.
  • High School Diploma or G.E.D. preferred
  • Class 5 Driver’s License
  • Minimum 10 years’ experience within the road construction industry.
  • 5 to 10 years’ experience as an Asphalt Paving Superintendent or Paving Foreman is required.
  • Knowledge of road construction methods, road construction materials and industry requirements.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.
  • Must be physically able to repetitively lift and carry at least 50 lbs. on a regular basis.
  • Out of town travel is required.
  • Overtime as required.
  • A portion of work is performed in an indoor setting and may include a combination of standing, sitting and walking. Sitting for extended periods of time is required.
  • Work is performed in an outdoor setting, which could include inclement weather, heat and humidity, and exposure to dust and asphalt.
  • Must be physically able to repetitively lift and carry at least 50 lbs. on a regular basis.
  • Use of Personal Protection Equipment is required.
  • Due to exposure to atmospheric conditions, the use of sunscreen, long sleeves, and appropriate headgear is recommended.
  • Must comply with all company policies.
  • Must comply with the company’s drug and alcohol policy and testing requirements.
  • Manual dexterity required to use computer and peripherals
